Thrash served in combat during World War I and eventually settled in Philadelphia.

Biography Born to an African American family in Griffin, Georgia, Thrash enrolled in evening classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. During the First World War he served with the famous all-black 92nd Division of the American Expeditionary Force, later known as the 'Buffaloes'.
